Graduate Intern – R&D Predictive Nonclinical Safety Models
What You Will Do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. During this program, you will internalize, reproduce, and validate published small molecule predictive safety models for drug-induced liver injury and cardiovascular risk assessment to better understand their performance, interpretability, and applicability to real-world toxicological data. Your work will help Amgen bridge the gap in predictive safety modeling and biological understanding — a critical step toward designing safer and more effective medicines.
This internship offers a unique opportunity for graduate students to apply advanced data science methods to meaningful biological problems, under the mentorship of experienced computational scientists and toxicologists. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists across data science and toxicology to reproduce, benchmark, and refine existing models using in-house and public datasets.
- Reproduce and evaluate a defined set of published machine learning models for toxicity prediction and other safety endpoints.
- Implement and adapt models using Python and R, applying best practices in model development, validation, and documentation.
- Compare and benchmark models using public and internal datasets to understand their robustness and translational relevance.
- Assess model performance using public and internal datasets to understand their robustness, translational relevance and identify opportunities for improvement/expansion or integration into existing workflows.
- Summarize findings and recommendations in clear documentation, visualizations and reports to cross-functional teams.
- Work with data science colleagues to define a model assessment protocol for future model evaluations.
