Power Delivery College Summer Internship Job Description:

Join our power delivery engineering team as a summer intern supporting our Power Delivery team. In order to qualify for this role, you must be pursuing an undergraduate or masters level degree in an engineering with a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. A minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0 is required. Prefer Sophomore, Junior or Senior.

As a power deliver summer intern, you can expect to:

  • Apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to broad variety of assignments and related fields.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects
  • Work on small projects or portions of larger projects. Support development of standards and engineering guidelines, conduct analysis on system performance and reliability strategy and provide recommendations.
  • Leverage new technology and Smart Grid solutions to provide superior service to our customers
  • Exercise project management, negotiations, performance tracking and reporting
  • Build communication skills, create presentations, attend and support meetings
  • Participate in all aspects of engineering design, permitting and construction
  • Work with other departments within the organization to establish customer requirements and project costs
  • Interact with customers that you encounter to ensure award-winning customer service
  • Apply design skills and utilize design programs to maintain and enhance our electric grid

ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS

Distribution: As a Service Planning Associate Engineer, you will design, oversee, and manage construction projects ranging from small upgrades to large community developments. Working directly with customers, developers, and contractors, you'll ensure reliable power delivery through various grid modifications including new services, overhead to underground conversions, and equipment upgrades. You'll utilize the Work Management System to create work requests, conduct field visits to gather project requirements, and create professional AutoCAD drawings for construction crews. Key responsibilities include interpreting company drawings, estimating job costs, completing material orders, ensuring inspections, and providing official FPL correspondence to customers. This role offers exceptional insight into customer service while applying engineering principles for equipment sizing, structural analysis for hurricane zone compliance, and maintaining our safety-first culture.

Protection & Control (P&C): As a Protection & Control Associate Engineer, you will focus on protective relaying theory and understand why it is essential to our grid operations. Through lectures, training, and hands-on experience, you will learn how protection schemes work in conjunction with substation equipment. You'll become responsible for understanding substation operations, equipment composition, testing procedures, and the critical role substations play in providing and maintaining customer power. A key focus will be understanding why abundant protective equipment is essential at substations to prevent disastrous situations. Your responsibilities will include daily check-ins, recognizing each piece of substation equipment and its purpose, becoming familiar with ANSI Device Codes, participating in safety meetings, learning to read AC and DC elementary prints, and understanding various software programs used by P&C. You'll participate in projects to replace and maintain equipment, attend job-specific lectures, learn to safely use daily tools, and have opportunities to observe testing of new feeder breakers and current transformers. This role develops both technical expertise and strong workplace professionalism.

Engineering & Technical Services (ETS): In the ETS track, Associate Engineers will focus on large-scale design projects across distribution, transmission, and substation systems. You will collaborate with county, state, and local government to design jobs that meet specific service dates and regulatory requirements. You'll utilize the systems to create work requests, conduct field visits to gather project requirements, and create professional AutoCAD drawings for construction crews. Key responsibilities include interpreting company drawings, estimating job costs, completing material orders, ensuring inspections, and providing official FPL correspondence to external customers.

Job Overview

To be considered for an internship, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists department with assigned projects
  • Completes challenging projects and assignments
  • Presents final project to senior leadership at the end of the internship
  • Assumes responsibility for own travel, lodging, and transportation necessary to be available for the program
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
